Approximately 2,000 Palestinians and Israelis took part in the "March for Independence" Friday, calling for the recognition of a Palestinian state.

Although the organizers of the march issued a statement saying the march was carried out peacefully, police had to intervene and separate right-wing and left-wing activists.

the racist, intransigent right that wields some much power in Israel.

Agreed......I believe that one of the major obstacle to a Palestinian State is Netanhayu and the right-wing clowns of the Knesset. It's unfortunate Livini, even though she won the election, is not the PM.......I think she has good intentions.

..I think she has good intentions.

As did Rabin, Peres, Barak, Olmert...unfortunately, though, it appears their counterparts did not. that brilliant Palestinian strategy ended up with Netanyahu, Lieberman in power. just a few, short years ago Bibi almost killed the Likud party all together by wining only nine (9!) seats in the Knesset. yet, the Palestinian leadership brought him all the way back by rejecting deal after deal offered to them by former willing Israeli governments. now they have the Chutzpa to whinge about having to deal with him, Lieberman. what exactly did they think was going to happen?

Perhaps the Israeli public will give the Palestinian leadership another chance at it, which they will happily use to miss on again, I'm sure.

Well, my question is, if the Palestinians got their own state, who would they fight? Wouldn't that render Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Al-Aqska Martyr's Brigade, etc ad nauseum, obsolete?

My guess? Even if they got their own state they would not leave off attacking Israel, and seeking her annihilation, and Israel knows this. These protesters are not all that unusual. Those of a differing opinion often take to the streets in protest, especially when there is the news media present that will wring every drop of agenda-driven propoganda from their reporting.

You're catching on to the essence of the resistance. Of course your query is hypothetical but if they follow Israel's model the leaders would be co-opted into the newly established government.

Well, my question is, if the Palestinians got their own state, who would they fight?

Each other!

Since the Israelis left Gaza and Hamas has gained control-- we actually have a pretty good preview:

*Palestinian victims of Hamas swear revenge "

SHADI Bakr Ahmad gingerly eased his legless torso into two new plastic limbs and vowed they would one day walk him back to his brutal destiny in Gaza. The Fatah man and his 14 comrades in rehabilitation have barely six legs left between them, after being mutilated by their Hamas rivals during the violent takeover of power last June. All have unfinished business: they want to get back on their makeshift feet soon to hunt down the men who maimed them

More-- from The Guardian:

Hamas murder campaign in Gaza exposed

Islamist regime has killed dozens and tortured others as 'collaborators' with Israel in war's aftermath, Amnesty and Guardian sources say

Another preview of what would happen:

Abbas: Gaza is an 'emirate of darkness'
The Hamas-run Gaza Strip is an "emirate of darkness," Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said Tuesday, as the rift deepened between rival Palestinian factions. <

blockquote>Well, my question is, if the Palestinians got their own state, who would they fight?

Bloody Hands in Gaza - Guess Who?

Some residents of Gaza were taken from their homes and shot in the legs or feet. Some were brutally beaten, and some were simply murdered, sometimes after hideous torture.

    It's a joke...get it?...

Art was teasing about the previous commenter using the word 'men'...

As a woman I also read the word 'men' and have to wonder if they are not 'including' women on purpose...or are they referring to the generic 'men' as in 'mankind/human's' which includes women ...when they are using that word in a statement of any kind...

Men would probably not know that though...

It's a quote from Nelson Mandela. The whole quotable thing goes:

Only free men can negotiate. Prisoners cannot enter into contracts.

The subject here is negotiations (not the gender of participants, but I think you knew that). It's a great point that any negotiations carried out under the current circumstances are conducted with people that are limited by military occupation. The US & Israel are pressing for negotiations in lui of declaring Palestinian statehood. In doing so they're advocationg for a prisoner to enter into negotiations.

What in the world would lead anyone to think that the Palestinians are capable of having a peaceful and viable nation? Time to throw in the towel and give the west bank back to Jordan and Gaza back to Egypt. Enough is enough. It needs to be done very soon before our dear leader gets us militarily involved here too.

What in the world would lead anyone to think that the Palestinians are capable of having a peaceful and viable nation?

Actually the question may be-- do they really want their own state living side by side in peace with Israel-- or is their main goal to destroy Israel completely-- and have the entire area? A recent seed: 6 in 10 Palestinians reject 2-state solution

73% of 1,010 Palestinians in W. Bank, Gaza agree with 'hadith' quoted in Hamas Charter about the need to kill Jews hiding behind stones, trees.

Sixty-six percent said the Palestinians’ real goal should be to start with a two-state solution but then move to it all being one Palestinian state.

sucks for them then, two state solution is going to have to happen along with the 1967 borders.

73% of 1,010 Palestinians in W. Bank, Gaza agree with 'hadith' quoted in Hamas Charter about the need to kill Jews hiding behind stones, trees.

why did you stop reading there?

    reading further:

The survey’s more positive findings included that only 22% supported firing rockets at Israeli cities and citizens and that two-thirds preferred diplomatic engagement over violent “resistance.”

Among Palestinians in general 65% preferred talks and 20% violence. In the West Bank it was 69-28%, and in Gaza, 59- 32%.

this section was above the one you quoted but you skipped it:

The survey’s more positive findings included that only 22% supported firing rockets at Israeli cities and citizens and that two-thirds preferred diplomatic engagement over violent “resistance.”

"With 5,795,000 Jewish residents of Israel, it doesn't seem the march of a thousand pro-Palestinian Jews amounted to much"

Eh, not so long ago in this country, in the beginning, a few thousand whites out of over 100 million marched right alongside black folks. In the end, it amounted to a lot.

In the beginning, Tunisa started off with one man. Egypt, with a handful of people. All movements for the rights and freedom of a people start off small. It's not about the numbers.

I understand how people want a future, and to live in peace and prosperity. If that's the case, and that's what they truly want, why is there still rocket fire from Gaza? Where are the protests over that? Never mind that it's largely ineffective. It reveals a dark and murderous heart coming out of Gaza. Israel does not fire into Gaza without provocation.

A couple days ago the AP did mention the march in one of it's roundup type reports by Matti Friedman. It was not the focus of the report. Most of the US local pubs rely on the news services for content. That AP story including the weak mention appears in some local publications (ie - Kansas City Star, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Fort Wayne Journal Gazette).

The Washington Post ran a Joel Greenburg authored story similar to the one in the seeded Haaretz.

That's pretty much all you can expect anymore. It's not local news here in the US. The US pubs rarely have the editorial direction and even less often would they have their own reporter at the scene of an event in a foreign country. People who rely on the local media are certainly missing the bigger picture.

True, but we would certainly hear if there was a 'violent disturbance'...especially if they could lay the blame on the Palestinians...

I think the selectness of the news is purposefull though...
